The Path to Making Stillness a Jewel

The Path to Making Stillness a Jewel

Stillness, the most precious jewel we can possess. It is like clear water that reflects the depths well. When conflicts settle and calm down, we can see ourselves, others, and the sky clearly. Perhaps the loneliest thing this century has lost is stillness. Sitting quietly and properly, calming both mind and body—it’s not easy. In secret, I muster the courage to be still.

Having quiet time is a practice. At first, it’s not easy. Sitting quietly with closed eyes, trying to calm the mind in silence, thoughts often leap up. At such times, quietly observe the breaths coming in and going out. Watch the breath as it leaves, watch the breath as it enters. Watching myself watch, this is the path to stillness, and the way to make stillness a jewel in my life.
