Mothers often worry

Mothers often worry if their choices might lead their children astray. This anxiety is exacerbated by what is disguised as “concern” but is actually meddling. Comments like “That’s wrong,” “You shouldn’t do it like that,” and “You still haven’t done it?” only heighten a mother’s insecurities.

Concern and interference are closely linked. Even if they are separated, it’s merely by a thin sheet of paper. Taking an interest is wonderful, but when it becomes excessive, it turns into interference. Excessive concern can have the opposite effect, creating resentment and anxiety, and shaking relationships. Even the language of love, when overdone, becomes nagging.
