Words that Comfort Many Mothers
Winnicott wrote, “For a child to find his or her deepest self, they need someone they can challenge and hate, without fearing the relationship will completely break. Who else but a parent can a child hate without such fear?” Many mothers find solace in these words.
I’ve come to realize that there’s a positive side to the hatred that occurs within the family. If hatred helps a child discover their deepest self, the same can happen for parents. So, don’t feel too guilty if you find yourself hating someone. It might be a perfect opportunity to comfort each other and discover your inner selves.
