The Nightingale Pledge
- I solemnly pledge to live my life with integrity and to dedicate myself to the profession of nursing.
- I will abstain from harmful actions and practices that could jeopardize human life.
- I will do all in my power to elevate the standard of my profession and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping in the practice of my calling.
- With loyalty will I endeavor to aid the physician in their work and devote myself to the welfare of those committed to my care.
No matter what the task, returning to the basics ensures success. By consistently revisiting our original intentions, we stay true to our path. This is similar to the phrase “return to the spirit of the Constitution.” The Nightingale Pledge is the foundation and ethos of nursing. It’s not only for nurses but applies to all of us who care for the health and life of others.
