When we develop a caring interest in the well-being of others

When we develop a caring interest in the well-being of others, we gain remarkable benefits. Not only do the circuits associated with compassion become more active, but so do the brain circuits related to happiness. Additionally, compassion strengthens the connections in the prefrontal cortex, which is crucial for guiding pleasure and happiness-related behavior. The stronger these connections become, the more altruistic a person becomes.

When someone close to us feels anxious, we too feel anxious. The well-being of others is directly tied to our own. When we show concern and compassion for others’ well-being, we also receive well-being and happiness in return. The brain’s happiness circuits activate, making us naturally more joyful and happy. We become more altruistic without even trying.
