Life Is Not in Machines
Medicine is not warm.
A thermometer does not have a body temperature. Neither do antibiotics nor oxygen saturation monitors.
Life is not within these machines that handle it.
The doctor who stares at the monitor while a patient gasps for breath and I, who hesitates while looking at the pharmacopeia, are essentially the same.
Doctors rely on numerous machines: stethoscopes, thermometers, blood pressure monitors, etc.
But machines always have limitations.
They can’t revive dying lives.
If a doctor’s gaze is fixed only on the monitor or machine, it ceases to be true medical care.
Even if thermometers lack warmth, doctors should not.
With a warm touch and a compassionate view, focus not on the machines, but on the person.
life, warmth, compassion
