Crying freely
Though sorrow may feel like a graveyard in life, it holds more energy than emotional numbness. That’s why, when a patient who has been through trauma starts crying, we recognize it as a sign of recovery. Once they begin to cry, they will find themselves eating again.
Feeling no sorrow at all is when things become truly dangerous. It signals both physical and emotional crises. Numbness and apathy can strip away one’s appetite and drive, leaving them buried in a figurative graveyard of life. When you feel sad, it’s vital to express it. Crying until the tears run dry is often the best path forward—it too is a form of energy, a sign of life. Only the living can cry.
