The wandering violinist
The violin is deeply intertwined with the life of Jewish culture.
In particular, violins often appear in Chagall’s paintings and are frequently seen in Jewish celebrations. Their melancholic yet powerful sound is considered a quintessential expression of Jewish identity. Wandering violinists were a familiar presence at Jewish weddings in Russia.
Chagall himself recounted stories in his autobiography about relatives who sought refuge on rooftops while playing the violin.
Everyone has an instrument that symbolizes their life.
For me, the harmonica represents my childhood. It was the one thing I always wanted but hesitated to ask for. I would muster the courage to ask my mother for one, only to swallow my request time and time again. Even now, whenever I see a harmonica, it stirs a bittersweet feeling in my throat—a mix of tenderness and a nostalgic smile.
