The Gut: A Mirror of Evolution

The Gut: A Mirror of Evolution

From an evolutionary perspective, the digestive system has been refined over billions of years.
Its most advanced form is what we now recognize as the “through gut”—a system with a mouth at one end and an exit at the other.
Viewed anatomically, this structure is shared by everything from worms to humans.
In that sense, we’re not so different.

Every living organism takes in nutrients through the mouth and releases waste through the other end.
The digestive system breaks down those nutrients and converts them into energy for life.
But if that energy is misused or wasted,
then from the standpoint of evolution, we become something less than even a worm.
