Who Finally Wins

Who Finally Wins

Because truth matters more than style,
some insist that only those who witnessed events firsthand
should be the ones to write history.
For example, at the beginning of Balbi da Correggio’s work,
the “Sonnet for the Reader” declares:
“When the hand that wields the sword also takes up the pen,
the most honest account of war is born.”
A person who only swings a sword
cannot be the final recorder of history.
To write history and spark a new civilization,
the blood-stained sword must be set down
and the ink-stained pen must be lifted.
A society where thinkers with pens outnumber warriors with weapons
is a truly advanced civilization.
It is that kind of nation, that kind of society,
that will ultimately prevail.
