Two Horses
Socrates once compared the human soul to a chariot pulled by two winged horses soaring through the sky. One horse represents our better nature—the drive toward goodness—while the other embodies our darker impulses. Guiding them is never easy, especially when the unruly horse refuses to listen. At times, they pull in opposite directions, and the chariot veers off course, tumbling back into the human world. Each of us steers our own chariot through confusion, constantly striving to balance the forces pulling at us from every side.
There are moments when the choice isn’t clear. What feels like the right path may simply be self-interest dressed up as virtue. Sometimes we let the horses lead without purpose or direction. But ultimately, the decision is ours. With steady hands on the reins, we must guide our own chariot toward harmony.
