The gestures of my body

The gestures of my body

Inside the human body
lives a doctor who knows how to heal.

A yawn fills the lungs with fresh air.
A stretch relaxes the muscles.
Sleep gives the brain a place to hide—
a quiet forest where denial can rest.

The mind, tangled like a web of rivers and streams,
drifts away from the weight of awareness
and gazes into the deep swamp of dreams,
into tropical forests and smoky volcanoes
with quiet wonder.

The more I learn about the body,
the more mysterious it becomes.
It’s like a physician that writes its own prescriptions—
restoring and healing with its own life force.

Even more amazing,
the body sends gentle signals
whenever I need them.

If I pay attention to those gestures,
if I respond with care,
I can protect myself.
