In the Analects

In the Analects, Confucius suggests a solution for controlling anger. This is known as Bun Sa Nan (忿思難). It means to “think of the difficulties that follow anger.” Anger is a fleeting emotion. However, if you fail to control it and let it out, the damage can linger for a long time. Even if you fully express that emotion, it leaves you with regret rather than satisfaction.

Living life inevitably brings moments of anger. We know well that anger brings no benefits. Yet, we explode in the moment and later regret it. So how do we prevent this? When anger surges, close your eyes. Exhale the heat and frustration as if blowing out a storm. With long, deep, thin, and quiet exhalations, release the anger in your heart and feel the point where your breath ends. This will help you get through the moment. After anger does not come more anger, but rather a sense of peace.
